Lovely Lavender Latte Recipe
Spring is here and the flowers are blooming and there’s no better way to celebrate than with this Lovely Lavender Latte Recipe.
Inspired by the gardens at the titular estate of Lavender House by Lev AC Rosen, the delicate floral-herbal scent and flavor of this lavender latte creates a lovely, relaxing experience for the senses and is very easy to make. You really don’t need any special equipment and only 3 ingredients (and only 3 more ingredients if you want to make your own lavender syrup, which is very easy to do so).
Lavender has many relaxing properties: it can reduce stress, help you sleep, and improve your mood. In fact, you can alter this recipe by taking out the coffee and just adding the lavender simple syrup to the warm milk of your choice right before bed to help you achieve more restful sleep.
Note: homemade Lavender syrup is not going to be the purple color you are expecting. It’s actually more likely to be between a faint golden to light grey, so if you want that pretty purple color you see in store-bought syrups and on social media, you’re going to need some coloring agent. I’ve included a natural way to achieve this using dried Butterfly Pea flowers, but you can just as easily use food coloring if you want.
Ingredients:
For Lavender Latte
- 4 ounces of strong coffee (or 2 ounces of traditional espresso)
- 1/2 cup of preferred milk
- 2 tablespoons of Lavender Simple Syrup
For Lavender Simple Syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons culinary lavender
- (optional) 3-4 dried Butterfly Pea flowers (for color)
Directions:
For Lavender Simple Syrup
- Add 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of sugar to a small saucepan and heat on medium until simmering. Stir to dissolve sugar.
- Remove pan from heat source and mix in 2 tablespoons of culinary lavender. Cover and allow to steep for 15 minutes.
- Strain out lavender (I used a pretty simple colander over a bowl and it did the job).
- (optional, for color) In a separate small bowl, mix 3-4 dried butterfly pea flowers with a few tablespoons of warm water. If it’s too blue, add a few drops of lemon juice (a very little goes a long way, don’t worry about it turning your syrup sour). Add to the simple syrup mixture until desired color is reached.
- Store your Lavender Simple Syrup in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. It should keep for 1-2 weeks.
For Lavender Latte
- Add 4 ounces of strong brewed coffee to mug (or 2 ounces of espresso)
- In a separate mug, mix 2 tablespoons of lavender syrup with 1/2 cup of preferred milk.
- Steam lavender milk in microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute (alternative: heat milk in a pan over the stove).
- lightly froth milk (however works for you – hand frother, shake in a covered jar, pump in a French press, etc). Note: traditionally a latte has a light foam and with more foam you start heading into cappuccino territory, but don’t worry about it and put as much foam as brings you joy!
- Pour steamed milk into mug with coffee, scooping out excess foam with a spoon if needed.
- Garnish with leftover lavender to brighten your day.
I hope you really enjoy this Lovely Lavender Latte, it’s quickly becoming a morning favorite of mine. I find it to be the perfect way to relax and center myself before starting the day, taking deep inhales of the beautiful relaxing lavender scent before each sip and slowly savoring the flavor.
